Immigration regulations

General rules

A visa is required for foreign visitors coming to Mozambique. Types of visa are the following

Description of visas

Type of visa Granted to
Visa for investment activity
  • Foreign investors, representatives or attorney-in-fact of an investing company for the purpose of implementing projects in an amount no less than USD 50 million.
Work visa
  • Foreign citizens wishing to work in Mozambique (must be used within 60 days following the date of issuance).
  • To obtain a work visa it is necessary to present,
  1. a letter from an employer assuring that the worker has the means to stay in Mozambique,
  2. an employment agreement,
  3. a health certificate,
  4. a work permit,
  5. a guarantee for the eventual repatriation of foreign citizens as well as the family, are required.
  • In rule, the applicant must be present at a visa office when applying for a visa. However, in the cases of foreign nationals employed to work in extractive industry projects the interested company must apply for a work visa for the relevant entities. After obtaining the authorization and approval of the Immigration Service, will the visa be forwarded to the diplomatic and consular mission in the country where the foreign citizen is.
Business visa
  • Foreign businessmen (valid for 30 days, extendable to 90, and must be used within 90 days from its issuance).
  • To obtain a business visa, the presence of the applicant at the issuing authority’s office is required, and it´s mandatory to submit letters of support with valid signatures and, in the case of letters issued by organizations or companies, may also be required a copy of the proxy or other document which gives legitimacy to the signatory to sign.
Tourism visa
  • This visa is exclusively intended for tourism or recreational purposes (usually valid for 30 days and must not exceed 90 days).
Transit visa
  • Foreign citizens who are in transit that have to stop in Mozambique before arriving in the country of destination (must not exceed seven days).
Residence visa
  • Foreign citizens who want to move to Mozambique (valid for a single entry for 30 days, extendable to 60 days, and after that, a residence permit must be obtained).
  • This application may be extended to spouses and children of the applicant.
  • To obtain a residence visa, it is necessary to present
  1. a health certificate,
  2. a criminal record certificate issued by a competent authority of the applicant’s country of nationality or the country where the applicant has been resident for the last year,
  3. a liability waiver (if minor or dependent),
  4. a subsistence guarantees and lodging in Mozambique and supporting income documents (if the applicant wishes to live on his own income),
  5. a letter of support with valid signatures. In the case of letters issued by organizations or companies, it is necessary to submit a copy of the power of attorney or another document proving the legitimacy of the subscriber.
Student visa
  • Individuals that will attend an officially recognized school (valid for 12 months,renewable).
Border visa
  • Foreign citizens from countries where there is no Mozambican embassy or consular representation.
  • Border visas may also be granted to a foreign citizen from a country where there is a Mozambican diplomatic or consular representation:
  1. for tourist purposes, or
  2. through reciprocal treatment provided by the country of origin to Mozambican citizens, or
  3. pursuant justified grounds, it was not possible to apply for a visa in the country of origin, subject to an additional payment of 25% of the tax due (valid for 30 days, non-renewable).
Visitor visa
  • Foreign citizens who move to the country for a simple visit (valid for a minimum of 15 days, extendable up to 90 days).
Visa for sports & cultural activities
  • Foreign citizens duly accredited to participate in demonstrations, sports training, sports competitions or cultural competitions.
  • The visa for sport and cultural is valid for a single entry and may be extended for a maximum period of 90 days.
Visa for temporary residence
  • The spouse and minor or handicapped children of foreign citizens holding work permits, allowing them to stay for a maximum of one year but extendable to the term of their stay in the country.
Visa for transhipping
  • Crew for the transfer of one vessel to another, or from an aircraft to another, or from one vessel to one aircraft and vice versa, and only allows a stay in the country for 72 hours.

Obtaining a work permit

  • Foreigners that work in Mozambique have to hold a work visa and the passport should be valid for at least six months.
  • Foreign workers can work in Mozambique under one of the following regimes

Required documentation
  1. Application;
  2. Certified copy of passport (all pages) of the relevant expatriate employee without any valid visa for Mozambique;
  3. Copy of the relevant employment contract or the document that evidences the existence of a contractual relationship;
  4. Certificate of academic or technical-professional qualifications of the expatriate to be hired and document evidencing his or her professional experience;
  5. Certificate of academic equivalence issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture;
  6. Clearance certificate issued by National Institute of Social Security confirming that the employer has no outstanding debts;
  7. Clearance certificate issued by the Mozambique Revenue Authority confirming that the employer has no outstanding taxes;
  8. List of workers, approved by the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security (MITESS);
  9. Evidence of payment of a fee in the amount of five minimum salaries in force for the relevant industry.

  3. Certified copy of company’s operating licence;
  4. Reason for request;
  5. Evidence of payment of a fee in the amount of five minimum salaries in force for the relevant industry.
  1. Application;
  2. Certified copy of the full passport (all pages) of the relevant expatriate employee without any valid visa for Mozambique;
  3. Copy of the relevant employment contract or the document that evidences the existence of a contractual relationship;
  4. Certificate of academic or technical-professional qualifications of the expatriate to be hired;
  5. Document evidencing the professional experience of the expatriate to be hired;
  6. Certificate of academic equivalence issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture;
  7. Clearance certificate issued by National Institute of Social Security confirming that the employer has no outstanding debts;
  8. Clearance certificate issued by the Mozambique Revenue Authority confirming that the employer has no outstanding taxes;
  9. List of workers, approved by the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security (MITESS);
  10. Opinion of the relevant union body of the sector of activity approving the hiring of such worker;
  11. Evidence of payment of a fee in the amount of 10 minimum salaries in force for the relevant industry.
